Role of Council Role of Council

Hinchinbrook Shire is one of the few local authorities in Queensland that is undivided for electoral purposes. The six Councillors and the Mayor are elected by all of the voters in the Shire with full elections held every four years. Voters must be over 18 years of age and enrolled on the Queensland electoral roll. The last elections held in this Shire were in March 2016 with the next elections to be held in 2020.

Council's role is to provide facilities throughout the Shire in an effective and efficient manner and encourage proper development of the area for the benefit of all citizens. To this end Council has developed a corporate strategy to ensure that sound financial management will provide a basis to encourage and facilitate employment and economic development.
